What it's like to be an expat (if you're not a man)

Three years ago, I quit my job, sold all my furniture, and bought a one-way ticket to Thailand. There's nothing more patriarchy smashing than upping and leaving to new territory, especially all by yourself. For the Toronto Star's expat series, I interviewed three Canadian women who uprooted their lives and left to warmer countries, for love, for family, for sweet sweet sun. Before you think they're living the high life (they are), just know they have to deal with awkward language mistakes and lack of access to good libraries. The expat struggle is real (just on a beach backdrop).
