Not everything has to be awesome

“Going farther might be good, going higher can be exciting, but I can’t buy into the glitzy self-expansion that comes with going farthest, deepest, highest, as if size were the only thing that has any currency.... But you might argue that all of life, increasingly, is like that: we are living right now through the Age of Awesome. Everything is “awesome,” “mega,” “massive” and “total,” and some of us, down here chewing a blade of grass and feeling tiny under the sun, might make a case for the notion that it is fine for things to be, well, O.K. Not just in travel, but in terms of food, fashion, music, business ideas and design, the lovely, enabling idea that things can just be “fine,” is under threat.”
